Steps and retaining walls look simple, but they are some of the most technical hardscape structures on a property. When they fail, it is usually not because the stones are bad. It is because the foundation, drainage, or load support underneath was not built correctly from the start.
At Pure Pavers, we treat steps and retaining walls like structural work, not landscaping. That means understanding how weight transfers through the system, how water moves behind and under it, and how to lock everything in place so it cannot shift over time.
How we approach retaining walls
A retaining wall has one job: hold back material and resist pressure from soil and water. If water builds up behind the wall, it will push and eventually cause bulging, leaning, and collapse. Our process focuses on removing the causes of movement, not just making it look straight again.
What we typically do includes:
• Excavation to expose the wall base and inspect what is actually supporting it
• Rebuilding the foundation zone with proper base material and compaction
• Adding drainage stone and a drainage path so water cannot build pressure behind the wall
• Reconstructing the wall in tight, level courses with clean alignment and proper setback
• Ensuring the wall is confined and supported so it cannot creep forward or settle
If the wall height, layout, or conditions call for reinforcement, we build with the correct approach for stability, not shortcuts.
How we approach steps
Steps fail when the base is weak, when the landing is not confined, or when the load is not distributed properly. Every step takes repeated impact from foot traffic, snow removal, freeze thaw movement, and shifting ground. If the structure is not built like a system, it will loosen, sink, and separate.
Our steps process focuses on:
• Digging down to rebuild the base properly, not just leveling the top stones
• Creating a compacted foundation that supports weight evenly
• Confining the structure so the step units cannot spread or walk forward
• Locking in consistent riser heights and safe tread depths for clean, comfortable use
• Resetting stones level, tight, and square so they look sharp and feel solid underfoot
What you get
A finished wall or set of steps should feel like it is part of the property, not something that might shift next season. Our goal is stability first, then a clean final look. If you have leaning wall sections, separating step blocks, sinking landings, or uneven transitions into your walkway or patio, we can rebuild it properly and make it last.

Pure Pavers is one of the few companies in our area that restores interlock. We had a large driveway and front walk that had sunk and just looked tired. Most driveway companies wanted to tear it out and start over. Owen came to meet with us and brought an amazing enthusiasm and creativity to restoring and transforming our driveway and walkway. We wondered about a border, and Owen helped us come up with a border that not only made the driveway more attractive, it allowed us to “stretch” the amount of original interlock, so that we could have a much larger front walk. Owen worked with us through several variations of the design for the front sidewalk until we were thrilled with it. Owen and his team also laid out a beautiful new sidewalk beside our garage, dealing with challenging elevation issues and making sure the drainage was perfect. Owen and his crew were a pleasure to have around. Tidy, extremely hard-working, and conscientious about the work being exactly right. The care taken to prepare the base and lay the interlock was impressive. We now have a beautiful, more modern driveway, larger front walk and new side walkway to our backyard that together create a gracious look that matches our house beautifully. After 12 years, our pavers/patio stones were uneven and looked dull. Pure Pavers Restoration restored the stones and made them look as good as new. Owen and his crew did such a wonderful job power-washing, removing the pavers, re-levelling the slope, re-doing the layer of bedding sand, re-positioning the pavers and once again power-washing before applying the polymeric sand. They were very organized so as not to mess with the original design and always left things clean and tidy. It is obvious that they are experts when it comes to dealing with pavers. Pure Pavers Restoration was contacted to repair an interlock patio and within a few minutes I received a reply. Owen came out and gave me a quote and a rough estimate on when he could start the job. I reached out to Pure Pavers after a 2 month ordeal with another contractor who had damaged our driveway while working on the road allowance of our street. Owen and Nate from PurePavers did a great job for us building almost 300 feet of walkways and a new driveway for our detached garage. Our home sits on a historical site and we wanted to use some of the old flagstone and other recovered stone from around the property. This made it very challenging because we only had however much stone we could recover from the site and could not match with any new stone. This required a creative design, to use what we had and make it last to cover the whole project. It also made installation very difficult as the stone was all irregularly shaped and of varying thicknesses. Owen and Nate did a great job making it work with all of the recovered stone and we couldn't be happier with the result. Our walkway was lookig very tired. After spotting a Pure Pavers sign on the corner, I called for quote. A few days later, we met & we decided to go ahead with the re-leveling.
